ABS :   American Bureau of Shipping;  A classification Society 

ABYC :   American Boat and Yacht Council: They publish standards for the marine industry.

APBA :   American Power Boat Association

ASTM :   American Society for Testing and Materials

DNV :   Det Norske Veritas;  A classification Society

IAMI :   International Association of Marine Investigators

IMO :   International Maritime Organization

ISO :   International Organization for Standardization

Lloyds Register :   Lloyds Register of shipping;  A classification Society

NFPA :   The National Fire Protection Association.  NFPA 302 is the main standard for yachts.

SNAME :   The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers
